Ladies and Gentlemen,
The Center For American Studies in cooperation with The American Law Society affiliated with the Faculty of Law and Administration of the Adam Mickiewicz University in Poznań are honored to invite you to take part in the II International Academic Conference titled „The Role of Law in the Life of an Individual: What Do the Social Sciences and Humanities Tell Us About It?”
In a lawless state, would the only factor limiting human behavior be his or her own conscience? What is the practical role of the law in everyone’s life? Do we feel that the law serves us as citizens or is it a nuisance? The interdisciplinary nature of the conference assumes a wide spectrum of considerations and analyses within the above-mentioned areas, and many more.
One of the most important goals of the conference is the discussion of the role of law in the life of an individual, using the achievements of psychology, philosophy, sociology and political science. In modern times, the postulate of integrating legal sciences with other social sciences and humanities is stronly emphasized, which forces us to seek answers to questions about the meaning of the law and the dynamics and directions of its development through the prism of the above-mentioned fields of knowledge.
WHEN?
The conference will be held on Saturday December 19, 2020 from 9.00 a.m. to 6.00 p.m. online on the Microsoft Teams platform. (In the event of a large number of applications, we reserve the right to extend the conference also to Sunday December 20, 2020).
WHO CAN APPLY?
We cordially invite students and Ph.D. students, experienced researchers, and others interested in the above-indicated fields of research to actively participate in the conference.
Proposed (sample) thematic areas of your conference presentation:
• the place of law in the social structure and its basic functions;
• legal policy issues in terms of sociological and legal research (law as a tool of social change);
• psychological studies in the theory and practice of law;
• achievements and directions of development of psychology in legal and procedural sciences;
• subjectivist conception of law as a psychological phenomenon (with reference to the considerations of Leon Petrażycki);
• the social scope of civil disobedience and its contemporary significance;
• selfish care for the legally guaranteed interests of the individual and the good of the general public in a democratic society;
• relations between the law and the freedoms of religion and conscience.
The thematic areas mentioned above are to be treated only as examples. The interdisciplinary nature of the conference assumes a very wide spectrum of considerations and analyses. Hence, we encourage you to submit abstracts that go beyond the above list.

• Michał Urbańczyk, Ph.D. (Faculty of Law & Administration, Adam Mickiewicz University in Poznan)
